My 1994 Pontiac Firebird 3.4L V6 that is overheating. I bought this car a few months ago and really enjoy it. It ran good for a week or so but started overheating. The fan switch is wired in directly to come on with a toggle switch under the dash.

Here is what happens.... I fill the radiator with the proper coolent and water mixture, run the car until the theromostat opens, the water level drops and I add more water/coolent to the top of the radiator and put the cap on. The car will not overheat when running/driving! I can drive it for a while with no problems at all, until I turn the engine off. Then after a few minutes it will start boiling out of the overflow container as the temp rises. If I keep the fans running for a while after the car is stopped, it seems to not overheat so bad.

The level in the radiator keeps going down and I dont know where the water is going unless it's over flowing when I'm driving or being burned up in the engine. There are no puddles of water under the car. It's not blowing white smoke or black smoke for that matter. There is no water in the oil, and no oil in the water. The engine was replaced at 160K, so I dont think it's a blown head gasket. I replaced the thermostat since there was not one in it when I checked. The overflow bottle always stays full like the fluid is not being drawn/sucked back into the radiator. When checked, the radiator level is always low. What could cause this? Headgasket? Cracked head or block? Freeze plug? Someone throw me a bone here... I'm at my wits end!

Thanks, One HOT Bird.

Have you tried a new radiator cap?
