1997 Pontiac Grand Am, engine valve trouble?

I am interested in a Pontiac Grand Am, but there is one problem. The owner said it needs a new Engine Valve and muffler. Does anyone know approx how much this would cost to fix in a shop? My pops said the head would probably need replaced ( to fix the valve) and that it would cost a pretty penney. But he didn't give me a good guess. I need an estimate, sooner that Tues when the shops open. The owner is asking $1500 OBO for the car.
I ment that she said its the EGR Valve, I am assuming that means engine valve?

EGR valve about $150. Muffler about $100 installed. There might be more wrong that the owner doesn't know about or isn't telling you.

Without knowing the mileage, the cars condition, exactly which optional equipment it has I can't say if $1,500 is a good deal. Here's a link to do your own appraisal. You want the private party price.
