1997 Pontiac Grand AM GT check engine light?

I replaced the spark plugs and when I cranked 'er up I got a check engine light. I tried the whole take off the negative terminal for 10 minutes thing, but no help.

Is there any other way to reset the check engine light?
If there was a problem with the plugs not firing etc. Wouldn't the problem have been much more apparent?

Does the light come on immediately? is the engine running rough? Did you disconnect something accidentally when you changed the plugs?
