Your car has no transmission dipstick (1995-2004 at least), you have to go to a mechanic shop to check it. It has to be raised on a lift and there is a special plug for that (not the drain one), when you open the plug and no fluid comes out you have to add some through the same plug.
I know, it's a pain....

You don't add the tranny fluid through the same hole. That hole your referring to is only the fluid level screw. The fill cap is located in the engine compartment, looking at the engine from the front of the car, the fill cap will be located on the right side of the valve cover and down a little bit. The cap should be red.

Plus, you don't have to bring the car to a shop to have it checked, You just simply put a drain pan under the fluid levels screw, unscrew it, if fluid drains out then the level is ok. If no fluid comes out then you will have to go up to the fill cap and pour in a little bit of tranny fluid until fluid starts to come out of the fluid level screw hole.

Where is the check the transmission fluid level on a 1997 Pontiac sunfire ??????!!!!

Vehicle has to be placed on lift with engine running, fully warmed, and fill plug removed to check level.
