2.2 Sunfire, timing chain broke. we tore it down, replace the chain, sprockets and tensioner. we got the number one piston to TDC aligned the timing marks on the sprockets and the tensioner.Put everything back together and fired it up. IT RAN LIKE CRAP! timing was WAY out. We know the crank was set right but are unsure about the cam. Since the chain broke, everything went out of alignment. Does anyone know how to set the cam to be in time with the rest of the setup?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

The gears are aligned properly but because the chain snapped the cam is out of position. If I'm thinking correctly when the #1 cylinder is TDC where should the crank be? If the wrong lifters are up won't the timing be off? We've torn the car apart twice to make sure we have the timing marks set right.

Thanks again.

the gear on the cam fits only one way and the gear on the crank fits only one way. So how is something off if you correctly align the marks as show in the link? Any chance you mixed up the plug wires?

plug wires are right. The sprockets obviously only go on one way. The timing marks are set as every diagram and instruction has said. The timing is still WAY OFF. I'm out of ideas as to what else it could be.

how do you know the timing is way off? did you do a compression test to see if you bent any valves when the chain broke?

+1 to that

how much did you try to turn it over prior to figure out that you snapped the timing chain?

I know the timing was off by the way the car ran despite insuring the timing marks were correct. it shook like mad. Although when we took the car apart and set everything up again it did run marginally better. I don't know how much the engine was cranked after the chain was snapped. I wasn't driving it. I didn't do a compression test. I did notice un-burnt fuel in the number one cylinder when I pulled the plug after trying to run it after replacing the chain.

Do a compression test and make sure #1 is firing.
