I have this 1997 sunfire 2.2 auto trans and lately it stalls right after a stop. sounds like its misfiring. Then say i start going sometimes it will feel like im not giving it gas even though I am. Usually only does this at town speeds. No problems on the highway or interstate. Also I have taken it to a reputable shop although not a dealer and they can't find out what's wrong with it but confirm there is a problem. I have a cavalier with the same motor and I know the parts are the same after verifying with the parts store. I took the tps map and iac off the throttle body and they are now on the sunfire. Nothing changed. I know theres someone out there who can answer this. Please help me.

1. Do you have a check engine light on?
2. Did you clean the IAC and the passage that it attaches to?
3. When you installed the IAC did you push in the pintle valve?
4. You cleaned the throttle body?
5. Have you confirmed that the catalytic converter is not clogged?

Well the check engine light is on because the converter is off the car and that sensor is gone. Yes I pushed in the valve and cleaned the entire throttle body. Everything I could short of pulling it off the car entirely. When the parts store or the shop put it on the scanner all that comes up is the o2 sensors. I drove this car for about 8 months with the converter off of it and only got this problem after that. The fuel filter and the fuel pump were replaced in december with all brand new items. New gas tank and lines.

So you have had it scanned since this problem started and the O2 sensor code is the only code?
Have you looked for a vacuum leak around the throttle body and intake manifold and any hoses?
Has anybody done a compression test?
Have you carefully checked the ignition coil pack connections and ground? The coils may short out when hot making it difficult to diagnose them as being the problem. If the coil packs on the Cavalier are the same and you know they are good try switching them.
Another thought is the ignition control module, again if the same try swapping.

Yes I have scanned it a few times and JUST the o2 code.
I have looked for a vacuum leak but can't see or hear anything. I have not been around the coil packs yet. I guess I figured I'd be getting a misfire code if something was wrong there.
And where is the icm located?

Everything I find about the icm says there will be no spark. Also from what I can tell it only does it in gear. If I just have it parked in the yard and manually throttle it I have no problems. I have been told there some sensor in the trans that can cause problems. However, I unplugged what I think is it and still have the problem. The plug I unplugged is on the front of the transmission clearly visible once you open the hood. and has a few wires on it. Maybe that's not it?

Ok I have found a ground on the motor in front and a ground at the battery tray. The car is very rusty and was very rusty at the battery tray. Going to see what that did. I had to move because the bolt broke off and it appears to have a nut fixed to the tray. So I carefully relocated it for now to the what I would call upper radiator part of the frame. Going to take it for a ride. Please describe where all the other grounds are at just in case this isn't it

Hopefully that is the before picture?

Yes that is the before picture. I temporarily moved it to the radiator support for now. There was an electrical thing mounted to a clip. The bracket piece was broken and so i taped the electrical piece to the harness and used that bolt+clip to hold that ground until I can drill out the bolt. It broke straight off when I tried to unbolt it to clean it up.
