So i'm looking for a little help on my sunfire...

OBD II returns these codes:
P0113
P0420

I already know my cat converter is shot but i'm a little concerned about the fact that the engine is knocking, almost sounds like its coming from near the power steering reservoir but i'm not certain...its been an on and off kind of thing for a while now but just recently is always there. Not sure what else it could be. Just changed the oil using 10w-30 (5 qts) not sure if thats important but I think that could have something to do with it.

Any advice is welcome, this also seems to be stumping my dad who's been a mechanic for 20+ years

Does it sound like it's coming from the timing chain cover? Use a length of rubber hose like a stethoscope to find the source.

Does it sound like a Prop Plane?

Its the tensioner for the timing chain on the 2200 GM engine.

Buy a timing set from Cloyes or the Dealer only , not parts stores brands!

( been there-done that) ;)

Yeah I have the 2.4, just changed the cat converter and all DTCs are gone along with the MIL.

Next thing I can think of is maybe one of the valves might need adjustung, sounds like its coming from underneath one of the valve covers.

Also I forgot to mention the knocking is RPM matched.

You have an overhead cam engine, OHC, I do not believe there is any valve adjustment.

Well i'm still stumped on what could be causing this, im taking it on an 800 mile round trip at the end of the month and I really want to get this taken care of asap. Would posting a video help?

Not really, you have to find the source and then start disassembling.

Found it. Spark plug 1 wasn't secured. Secured it, reinstalled the cover and runs so much nicer. Knocking noise gone as well.

wow, that was a simple fix, glad you found it!

Yea but now I found my next issue. Plugged up to the OBD port and found a few I/M problems:

EVAP not ready
CAT not ready
O2S not ready
HO2S not ready
EGR not ready

Thinking I may need to reset the ECM...

If you havent driven much since correcting the plug problem you could simply drive normally and wait for them to reset.
