I have a 1999 Grand Am and it starts to boil the coolant out of the plastic tank around 214 degrees, and the fans kick on then too. When should the fans kickon. Could I have a plugged up radiator?

didnt you just post the same quesion on the Grand Prix site? The fans are coming on at the correct temperature. Does the fluid look clean or rusty? Doesnt the tank have a pressure cap?

I put a different thermostat on and pressure cap, and bled out the coolant. Could it be the sensor reading too low or the radiator plugged up?

Do you have a 50/50 antifreeze water mix, and a good radiator cap. The radiator should'nt boil till 240 or more.

If its boiling out too soon. Could it be the water pump not pumping? I feel the hoses and there's no pressure on the hoses.

The pump creates flow, the pressure is from the heat. If there is no pressure when it is at temp, then you are losing pressure somewhere. The cap would be the first thing to replace/check.

If you read a couple posts before I already replaced the cap. If the water pump isn't turning that would make it overheat or get to temp really fast. What would make it boil out before the fans kick on?

how is the water pump going to stop turning if it has a pully with a belt on it that isnt screaming loudly. You could have a combination of things going wrong. With a proper pressure cap your fluid will not boil at 214, so your gauge or sensor could be wrong. In addition the fact that the fans come on after further indicates you are getting the wrong reading. Have you checked the true temperature with an IR gun? Having soft hoses means you have air in the system which will cause it to overheat. Are you doing this work yourself or a shop?

I see you replaced the cap. I was just saying with a good cap any system shouldn't boil at 214. I agree with Mel, get a true temp reading, and go from there

I did a pressure test and the head gasket was leaking. Put new gaskets in and new cap and still does the same thing. The top radiator hose gets warm and the bottom stays cool. Does that mean the radiators plugged up? I took the water pump off and the fins were fine.
