My brother has a 1999 Grand Am 2.2L that is acting CRAZY. I haven't checked the car out myself, but he called me the other day and said that the car had stalled and would not crank. We went thru the usual--battery--alternator--starter and they all checked out good. He said that the car was making a strange noise when trying to crank and I thought that the flywheel might be broken. He had it towed to a shop and was told that the motor was bad. This morning he called a salvage yard to pick up the car. The wrecker driver asked for the keys and--PRESTO--- the car cranked and idled perfectly. My brother drove it around the block several times and it ran perfectly!! What gives? Any ideas ? Does it have a pcm or ecm? Could it be a main ground wire? Any help would be appreciated.

Really hard to say since you didnt check the car yourself and the shop you are dealing with apparently has no clue. If it didnt start how did you manage to rule out the starter, the alternator and the battery without removing them and bench testing them?

My nephew had starter bench tested and was okay. Battery tested, charged and was okay. He called me today and said that alternator pulley was "bent" and that serpentine belt was broken. Wonder if that had anything to do with the noise it was making when he tried to crank the car?

What about this shop that thought the engine was "bad" and didnt see a broken serpentine belt?

Not familiar with this place but sounds like the place NOT to take your car.
