My wife has a 2000 Bonneville that has gone through 5 Ignition Control Modules in the past 16 months. It has gotten to the point where I carry a spare in the trunk along with tools to change it whenever it happens.

The modules are put in with thermal paste for proper heat transfer, all connections have been checked - no corrosion and bolts look like new. Car runs very well and then one day, it will crank and not start. Change the ICM and in 20 minutes we are on our way, running great.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this many failures?

what brand and part number ICM are you buying? have you had your charging sytem checked to make sure you dont have a voltage regulator issue?

I have been using (O'Reilly Auto) BWD Engine Management Technology part # CBE47. I have not checked the engine charging system but will look into it and verify that it is operating properly. Thank you for your suggestion.

I have checked the voltage from the alternator at the battery and find it to be 15.04 volts. It seems to have very little change as the rpm is slowly raised to 3000. Does this seem to be enough out of tolerance to cause the failures that I am experiencing?

that is a little on the high side, i would start with having the battery load tested. Did you read the comment about the ICM from BWD? If it was me and I had gone through 5 failures of the same manufacturer I would buy from someone else.

I want to thank you for your knowledge and the information you have shared regarding this issue.

The original factory installed battery was replaced at the beginning of this winter - not because it was bad, but I was not wanting to have to worry about failure of a 14 year old battery in the middle of winter in my wife's car.

Three of the failures of the ICM were when the OEM battery was in use and 2 of them have been since the new Costco battery was installed.

I did read the information on the BWD components and will be ordering a new AC/Delco part to replace the current ICM.

Does it seem necessary that I pursue the voltage issue or should I be more concerned with installing the new Delco part?

i would go back to Costco and tell them it appears your voltage regulator is charging on the high side and would like to make sure you dont have a weak cell in the new battery. It would not be the first new battery that has an issue.

The Battery did indeed have a weak cell and it was replaced. In the past 6 weeks I have not had a failure of the ICM. I will keep my fingers crossed and if I do experience another failure - I will replace the ICM with a Delco part. Thank you for you expertise.
