I was driving around in the mountains on a 105 degree day, stopped for some ice cream, to enjoy the scenery and to add a quart of oil, it burns a little at 199200 miles. and my 2000 grand am started missing and sputtering and would not go over 45 mph. no smoke or leaks no oil in the water or vice versa. was not out of gas. check engine light flashing, traction light on, temp gauge normal for a 105 degree day. I drove it about 30 miles back home and parked it. no change in problems. i'm thinking timing chain, can i check the timing on the car? without a scanner? the reason i think timing chain is the engine has a definite rattle when it idles, even before this happened and i have never had the timing chain changed.

any ideas are appreciated grammer and spelling tips are not :)

found a problem

found traces of arc'ing to from the coil adapter to the head and 1 of the spark plugs was wet and smelled of gas going to replace it and see if it does it

after fixing the above if you still have a flashing light and have disconnected the battery for a few minutes, take it to autozone or similar parts store that does free computer code lookup then tell us what the code is

replaced the coil adapter and the boots (because one of them tore when i pulled it out) running on all four now, unpugged the battery for a hour and the lights stayed off too.
