I have a 2000 Grand Am 2.4L that ran fine when parked one evening and the next morning cranks fine but doesn't start. The fuel pump runs for several seconds when the key is turned on. The fuel filter is new. If the inlet air plenum is removed and gas squirted in the intake the car runs so it is definately a fuel problem. There is fuel in the tank. The security light is not flashing. I checked the fuel injector fuse. There are no computer codes and no check engine light. There doesn't appear to be any schraeder valve on the fuel rail for pressure testing. How does one check fuel pressure on this car? Any other ideas on what could be causing a fuel problem? I suspect the injectors aren't firing. How is this confirmed?

The injectors can be checked for pulse with a noid loght. It plugs into the injector plug and flashes when the injector should fire.

The injectors were firing, but there was no fuel pressure in the system despite the pump running. I dropped the tank and found the pump had a collapsed inlet filter, though the inlet screen to the surrounding sump was clean. The pump also intermittently sprayed fuel from a top post next to the relief valve when running. I repaired the pump and everything now works fine -- without spending $300-$500 for a new pump.
