I guess I was bilked out of 50 bucks by NAPA, who suggested the GM engine moving tool to tilt the engine to access the back spark plugs.

My engine doesn't have dog bone mounts, which I should've checked out before I bought the thing.

I'm just wondering how does anyone get to the back spark plugs on this type of engine. Is there any good way to do what the GM engine moving tool does?

This is the tool:

I'm pretty disappointed that I can't use it is all - just looking for better ways to do it...

Is this the DOHC 3.4? If so you remove the intake plenuum. In either case pick up a Haynes or similar manual.

not really sure - how can i tell if it is DOHC? it's the 3.4L.

the haynes manual doesn't mention to remove the plenum. It only says that they are difficult to reach and you'll need a universal joint attachment. I'm not sure that's the correct way to go, though. I want to put them in with the correct torque.

Nobody uses a torque wrench to install spark plugs. To prevent overtightening just use your forearm when tightening dont use you whole arm. You will feel when the plug is fully seated. Have you tried if they are accessable with a universal joint and a plug socket?

If it is the engine I am thinking of, instead of using a solid ratchet, use one that has the ability to tilt / swivel the head on the handle. You will also use the universal joint, possibly more than one, and a few extensions. It will will feel a bit sloppy at first until you get used to using it, but it helps with not having to be as much of a contortionist. It should make it so you dont have to be a contortionist to turn the ratchet at least.

It does help to have longer skinny arms. I have gotten my forearm stuck on one of the 3.4s in the past because my arms wasnt skinny enough / long enough to get where it needed to be. I crawled up and almost laid on the motor to get to the back side plugs.
