2000 Sunfire 2.2 bypassing the ac compressor

The bearing in the ac compressor is sounding like it's on it's way out. I was wondering if I could buy the smaller belt for a Sunfire without ac and use it to bypass the ac compressor. It's winter in New England so if I could put off buying the whole compressor until the summer that would be lovely.

I just want to make sure it's not going to ruin anything.
 
From the looks of it, you can buy a shorter belt without the need for a bypass pulley.
Looks like you won't even need to remove the compressor until you're ready to repair it.

Same issue bypass..

We need to make the same change to our belt. . Just wondering if that was an acceptable fix. Just rerouting the belt to skip the air compressor.. Is it still working ok .. What would be the pro of getting a bypass pulley?
 
What exactly is a bypass pulley and where have you seen it?
 
Mel, its basicaly a pulley that goes in place of the compressor. Sangel, the only pro I can see is using the same length belt. And maybe a little more contact area for the water pump.
 
Hey I'm in same situation. What size smaller belt did you end up using ?

You can measure the required belt length with a piece of cord.
