I started my 2000 sunfire yesterday morning and the oil light came on and didn't go off. I shut it off and checked the level and it was fine. Started it back up and the light went straight off. Drove it down the road and it came back on. I turned around and headed back and it would come on and go off but it didn't seem to have anything to do with the engine rpms. I just changed the oil and filter about a week ago and noticed the filter I got had smaller holes in the top than the one I took off. I'm wondering if I may have gotten the wrong filter. I've also had a slight knock like a rod knocking for the last 6 months or so. It doesn't seem loud enough to be causing a problem though, I've heard much worse before. Anybody have any tips on figuring this one out?

remove the oil pressure sensor and hook up a gauge to see if you have low pressure or a bad sensor

Thanks melsg5 for the reply. Where is the oil pressure sensor?

Not sure which engine you have.

On the 2.2 OHV engines, it's located on the front left side
of the engine block near the oil filter.

On the 2.2 OHC engines, it's located on the front side
of the engine block right below the oil filter housing.

On the 2.3 and 2.4 OHC engines, it's located at the left end
and on the backside, of the intake cam box.

Yep found it. I've evidently got a connection problem on the sender. Moved the wiring harness around and it hasn't come back on. I don't think the knock is bad enough to cause low oil pressure on a 120,000 mile motor anyway. And the knock goes away when it warms up. I think the knock is a wrist pin or something else. Thanks for the help!!!:o

The low oil pressure causes the knock, not the knock does not cause low oil pressure.
