I bought about two months ago a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 with the 2.4 4 cylinder engine Car has 56,000 miles. So far Ive put on 4 new tires, a 4 wheel alignment, an oil change, a new gascap, one new headlight bulb, two new wiper blades, and rainx :D .
I drive mostly highway with the cruise on between 65-75 mph 50 miles a day to work and back.

I've been consistently getting about 20-20.5 mpg for the whole tank. I have no check engine light, no under-inflated tires and minimal junk in the trunk. Two GM mechanics have told me that theres nothing wrong with the car even without looking at it, but if the EPA says I should be getting 19/27 and Im getting 36% worse then something must be wrong.

1 What mileage do you get in your '01 or similar Grand Am with the 2.4?

2 What should I do?

The EPA tests were done at lower highways then what you are driving. As an experiment try driving at 55-60 and see what happens. Have you checked your air filter to see if it needs replacing?

I have a 2.4 pont auto. It gets lousy mpg in the city stop and go mabey about 18 mpg. These motors have 2 intakes valves, 2 exhaust valves so they are using up more gas than a standard 1 intake, 1 exhaust motor. I would not buy another when a 6 gm gets 18 in the city stop-go and 26 highway. Also you have to pull the timming chain to replace the water pump. Pure junk to work on and poor millage for a 4cyl. The highway mpg might be good as I haven't tried it

2000 grand am se 2.4, 24 city, 30 hwy have gotten up to 33 hwy. they must have taken the some mileage from yours and put extra in mine
