I have a 2001 grand Am that over heats on a constant basis. I have changed the radiator, hoses, thermostat, and water pump. We have cleaned out the lines and removed as much sludge as possible. Removed the guts from the thermostat to no avail. I will run ok for awhile then overtemp. Oh by the way we changed the things listed above twice just in case we got a bad one. The water pump side of the radiator will warm up and the other side will overtemp. I am lost at this point. The heads had been checked and they are not warped or cracked.

Exactly how hot does the engine get? At what temperature do the fans turn on?

The temp gauge maxes out and the red light come on. Don't know about the fans. Sorry

Did you bleed the air out of the system?

Well if the fans dont run, the car will overheat, so you have to check the fans.

Yes the air was taken out of the system. The water does not flow thru the engine. Even with the thermostat guts being removed. I believe there must be some kind of blockage but with everything checking good I'm lost.

How do you know that water doesnt flow thru the engine? Have you checked if the fans are running when the car gets hot? Do the fans run when you turn on the A/C?

The fans are running. I asked the garage that has it to check it again to make sure. When it maxes out at temp, that I don't know. I need to go by and sit and watch for the fans and temp with air on.

Well if it is at a garage, arent they trying to resolve the problem, why do you have to go and watch?

Beacuse I've spent over 1K to fix this problem and we are lucky if we get down the street before it overheats again.

That's a big 10-4 Good Buddy.

The problem is how much more do I sink into the car with 120000 miles on it.

The latest on the overheating saga. I went to check the fans for my self and they do come on at right temp. They also come on when I turn on the A/C. I squeezed the right hand hose from the engine to the bottom of the radiator and could almost close it with my hand, and it was getting hot. My temp in the car was reading 240. When I attempted to turn on the heater to move some water out of the engine it would not heat the air. It stayed cold like the A/C was on. I'm wondering if flushing the engine would help. I have a power washer at home LOL. Take both hoses off the engine and shoot a power hose thru the engine. What does anybody think about the power wash idea.

It sounds like you have air in the system and the shop doesnt know how to bleed it out.

If you want to flush the system, I'd stick to some Prestone Super Cleaner, and forego the pressure washer. While you're at it, I have my pressure cap checked, or just replace it since it's under $10 at AZ.
If nothing else, try bleeding the system again since it sounds like air is preventing the proper circulation of coolant.

Can someone describe to me the procedure to remove the air from the water system on the engine. Everyone is saying "air in the system". I would appreciate any direction in this area.
