2001 Montana Over heats when ideling?

My mechanic Just put in a new manifold gasket and thermostat. the old gasket had holes in where the antifreeze was coming out. he showed me the old one and it was pretty bad. anyway after a week I smell anti freeze again and now the car runs hot when I idle and runs rough. it goes away when I start driving I drove from Milwaukee to Chicago fine until I idle for a while. the fan kicks on ok. My mechanic says to check the antifreeze it could be low and take a while to work in. is this correct or do I have another problem?:eek:
 
The antifreeze should be full from the start. My first guess would be Fans, but if they work.
 
when you siad the mechanic said it will take awhile for the coolant to work in..leads me 2 believe he did not bleed the coolant system..which will cause over heating...the first thing to do is look for a leak and see if you carpets are wet in front
 
Would bleeding be the same as a radiator flush? and why after a month would ut start to over heat?

sounds as if it needs bled ,you might have to park on a steep incline(facing up hill) and burp the system to get out all the air .
 
How about i go get it flushed. I noticed that there are still dexon pelletts still in the radiator.or what every pontiac uses. when he replaced the gasket he used regular antifreeze
 
dexon pelletts ? It doesn't matter what antifreeze you use,but you should/can't mix them. I would flush it if you can see some orange in there if you correctly flush it then you should get all of the air out and might solve both problems.
 
you could get it flushed, and hope they bleed it right..bleeding the system means getting all the air out of the system..you have to run the car with the ratiator cap off while the air works it's way out..some times you will have a bleeder screw which you have to un-screw it untill all the air out..

I called a couple places. one place says that they can do a flush for $59 with a machine that replaces the old with the new but wont get the heater core. the other guy i went to says he can do it for $140 and that he would pull the frezze plugs (what ever that means) and flush everything and would make sure the pelletts for the old antifreez are gone. and the last place is $69 and he also has the machine but would get all the old antifreeze out also. and told me the guy that wants to pull the freeze plugs is a idiot that his machine will do a great job. so which one do i go with?:rolleyes:
 
read your manual and do it yourself, thats what i did. i had the same prob. after a day or two it burped out the air.
