2001 Montana Radiator Fans

The fans have stopped working and I have tried everything possible to get them working. They just will not work. I have replaced the relays and the coolant temp sensor. I tested both fans with a "hot" wire and they both work fine. So what is there left to do. The heat gauge will sometimes go up toward 3/4 ways and then it will drop down to what I call normal about 1/4 ways on the gauge. I was told the only other thing it could be is the pcm. Does this sound right? A intake gasket or head gasket would not cause the fans to not kick on, Would it? The fan does not run with the A/C on. I am lost with this one. If any one knows anything else at all to check please reply.
If I run a toggle switch to the fans which one should I run it to. DO both need to run at the same time? I will be using to A/C if that matters.

you could try and do a search on this site I remember one of the members finding open wiring due to corrosion or something rubbing and causing an open. what you describe is either the computer(ecm,bcm,pcm) not working or bad wiring. I would try and follow the wiring backwards from the fans to the fuses,relays and look for broken wires. you might have to open up the plastic wire lum that bundles all wires together. look around the battery area and other hot areas. good luck keep us posted. and yes the fans should come on when you select the ac position but i think the outside temp has to be above ~32 degrees .

Well I thought would disconnect the battery today for awhile and see what would happen. Low and behold the fans started working but they will not shut off after I have turned the ignition off. I waited a good 5 minutes and the only way they stopped was for me to remove one of the relays and then they stopped running. Really weird. Should I replace the relay?

No It sounds like a short in the wires..try testing all the wires to the fan..

you could try swapping the relays with other ones that a are the same ,ex the window or redefroster ?
