2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4dr, Service Engine Light?

I just bought the Grand Am, and it started squeaking under the hood last week. So i figure its the fan belt or the alternator (not sure yet), So now this week the engine light is on. Not sure what it is, any ideas for both situations? or if their related? Thanks.

they are probably not related, have the engine light checked at a local autozone or similar place that provides the service for free. The squeek could either be a belt or a belt tensioner or something else.
