2001 sunfire gt rough idle

I have a 2001 sunfire gt and lately it has been idling very rough and has a bad hesitation. Once it is going down the road the car runs good. But when the car comes to an idle while stopping for a light or stop sign the idle is very poor and sometimes stalls. When the engine is cold it runs ok. I put a code reader on it and nothing displayed. Everything displayed "ready" except something that said "mill" it displayed "off". Any suggestions?

The iac would'nt cause hesitation..but when's the last time you did a complete tune up? I'm guessing you have the 2.4 twincam?
 
Yes i have the 2.4 twin cam. I put on a distributer cap (not sure if it is still called that on this engine) and spark plugs. What else would you recommend for a tuneup. I prefer to do my own work but i never said i know what i am doing. :p This weekend i am going to clean the idle air control valve (as recommended by another member).

air filter..next time you fill ur tank up put some lucas full system fuel cleaner..put it in first then fill the car up
 
Its running great now. The iac valve was carboned up really bad so i cleaned that. While looking in the physical area of the aic i noticed a vacuum line about 4 inches to the drivers side of the iac dry rotted and leaking fixed that and everything is ok. Thanks again for tunining me in to the fix for my faithful steed. I pulled the spark plugs and once again it was puddled with oil over the spark plugs closest to the timing belt. that is my next project. It looks like the head bolts hold down the valve covers down so i am nervous about that. :o
 
Similar Problem

I had a similar problem in my 2000 gt with the 2.4 twin cam. i changed the spark plugs out and replaced them with autolite irridium spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body and i was good to go
