Just picked up a sweet '01 coupe. We knew going in that the car would not shut off, so we bought a new ignition switch, but haven't installed it. Took it to the auto shop and they came back and said the key tumbler is bad, part costs $200 and must be programmed at a dealership. WTF?

If I was you I'd install the ignition switch first before handing over any money for a new barrel.

When you say the car wont turn off, do you mean the key wont turn or the key turns but the car continues to run?

Key turns but car continues to run. We have been disconnecting the battery and unplugging the alternator to get it to stop. Auto shop reports that they now have it set up so that starting it involves a screwdriver. This oughta be interesting.

We don't have the tool to do it. Auto shop quoted $75 for the job (labor only, we already have the part).

You can do the job with a pair of long nose pliers with no problem.
3 torques screws to remove the bottom housing, the top just pops off...unplug the two connectors on the ignition switch and then the two screws holding it on.

The shop has got it jerry-rigged and it's "hanging down" and "not safe to drive" so God knows what they did to it. I don't know why they couldn't have just left it and disconnected the battery when they needed to shut the car off.
I'm waiting on a call back with an estimate on something else that's wrong on the car, and I will find out just exactly what they did to the ignition.

The key turns but the car continues to run.

That sounds like the ignition switch not a tumbler.

Not to Thread jack but possible same issue, i have a 2008 GT. Car wont start or turn over. it recognizes when i go to the accessories and the fuel pump cycles but nothing after that. new battery and new starter.

Could this also be an ignition switch?

Check the clutch safety switch.

After a bunch of repairs, finally got this thing past state inspection. New windshield was the main holdup. Found one from an old '03 and had it installed.
Still starting the car with a screwdriver. Have not replaced that (ignition switch?) yet. Will attempt shortly and report back.
