Hi,

I'm new to this forum, so let me introduce myself.

I'm Larry, and I recently purchased a 2002 Aztek. The Aztek was running great until around 2 weeks ago.

I picked my brother n law up to go play golf. Approximately 15 miles into the trip, the car beginning to sputter, backfire and eventually stalled. Within a 3 mile distance it stalled like 4 times.

I eventually got to the course and let it sit for around 3 1/2 hours. After golf, it stalled another half dozen times on the way home. We were under the impression that it was water in the tank so we added some dry gas, but it didn't work. It continued to do the same thing.

I've tried to run it numerous times and it continues to do the same thing at random times.

Before I purchased it, the woman had a new fuel pump put in. I've replaced the fuel filter and air filter to no avail.

Another example.....

Drove it last weekend.. Made it 9.8 miles and it stalled 3 times. It's kinda scary driving 55-60 and then having it stall like that.

Here's exactly what it does...

It'll hesitate.. Start to "buck... the RPM guage will bounce up and down and the battery light will flicker... Then it stalls.

I'll pull over, and it'll start back up like nothing ever happened.. I'm at a loss as there are no CEL's.

Please help. :)

Larry

Edit -- If I start it now.. it'll idle for ever with no issues at all...

have you done a fuel pressure test? how many miles since the plugs were changed?

I have not. I really don't know how to be honest.

lol.. The lady I bought it from had her nephew change the front 3 prior to me buying it from her. So the back 3 haven't been changed in some time.

I just drove it again.. It's really strange. I drove it to my dads (3 miles or so) and it stalled once again. Parked it at his house for like 3 hours.. Started it right up, drove back to the store, which is almost across the street from where I live.. I parked it, shut it off, went in and then when I started it, it showed that I had a little less than an 1/8 of a tank of gas..

I currently have over a half a tank, so I knew something funky was going on. I started taking off and wham-o.. it stalled again.

I'm at a loss.. I'm hoping it's something really stupid.

I was attempting to replace the back 3 spark plugs when I noticed something..

The PCV hose connected to the rear of the engine was half out.. It doesn't even sit in there properly.. Sorta just flops around.

Would this cause my issues? I'm going to attempt to replace it asap.

Update......

I removed the PCV hose.. Cut the ends off and added high pressure hose to the ends.. Air tight.

I reinstalled the hose where it goes.
My wife drove it to work for almost 2 weeks (just over 200 miles) and then it started to act up again.

I went back out and noticed nothing was wrong with the pcv hose.
I'm totally at a loss right now.

Please help before I break it up!

so did you ever replace the rest of the plugs? you dont have a check engine light? did you do a fuel pressure test?

I have an 01 and it does the same thing. It would be easier if the check engine light was on.I wonder if the computer is going bad.I am looking for one right now used.I will post if I come up with something.

I think i licked the problem.Ignition control module under the coil packs.I went to the junk yard and got the whole unit w coil packs and running good now.
