I have a 2002 Grand Am GT that I bought used... Lately the automatic transmission seems to want to roughly shift from park into drive and maybe reverse. Almost like it slams in place. Sometimes rough in lower gear shifts while driving at low speeds.

As mention on this forum I guess I cannot check the fluid. It has 174,000 miles on it. Should I just try to change the fluid and filter or anything that and see what happens? Are there engine light codes for this that might be stored? Any other suggestions as to how long dexcool shoudl last? I see no leaks.

Thanks,
Mike

Well it doesnt hurt to change the fluid and filter with that mileage and not knowing if it ever was done. The other thing is check all the motor mounts and a possbile bad shift solenoid. The computer may store transmission codes. Dexacool is a 5 year coolant.

Thanks Dexccol is the trans fluid right? thats what I meant anyway...

Dexcool is antifreeze. Dextron is transmission fluid.

OK, I thought it was strange that you jumped from a transmission question to an antifreeze question. For maintanence intervals look in the owners manual which can be found by using google.
