Just picked this Van up at a Auction as a DD/beater ,I dont know anything about them or GM`s (im a ford guy).

I have no heat, just blows cold air front and rear

-Van temp runs fine
-heater core isnt leaking
-Hose by rad cap doesnt get that warm if at all
-No visible coolant leaks
-Coolant looks dirty like a brown color
-Oil is fine no milk shake ect
-When switching from cold to warm on the HVAC i can hear it ingaging but not certain its opening up consistantly as the sound isnt always the same

I`ve done a search on this site and i just mostly come up with the lack of air coming out of vents (i did it this morning easy fix)

I read about a possible AUX heat pump on a google search but found no mention of this on the site.

what is the engine temperature? you say "Hose by rad cap doesnt get that warm if at all
" sounds like a thermostat stuck open or if engine is running hot, clogged system.

Engine is not running hot, gauge is half way and climbs a little but goes back once fans kick in.

Im thinking it could be a thermostat also but i fgured the van would over heat if it was a bad thermostat.

not if it's stuck open, the engine would run 160 or less which barely would produce heat

Well took it for a longer drive and the temp gauge did rise to almost the red but went down right away,as engine temp went up it obviously started to pump heat out the vents.

I`m going to change the thermostat right now its cheap i can do myself.

Question............. easiest way to get @ that bastard of a lower bolt ?? do i have to remove the heat shield???????

Keep an eye on oil\ coolant level. This is also a symptom of a bad intake manifold gasket. That is if the thermostat is working properly.

Not sure what's wrong with the lower bolt, I didn't put much thiught into the job last I did it. Hou may beed a flex head ratchet I guess

Well got that SOB of a thermostat done,Van runs a tad bit cooler but still no heat???

any opinions??

just to cover the simple stuff ,did you get all of the air out of the system ? sometimes that would cause no heat . I wonder if the heater core could be clogged ? You did say that the antifreeze looked like a brown color ?

I`d like to think i did,yes it looked like a dirty orange.

I went for another drive,u feel faint heat now and still doesnt over heat.

ill keep a eye on the coolant levels, its not a head gasket but it could be a intake gasket i keep reading about

Alright so ive driven this van for a few more days and put some k`s on.

Heat is sub par still but if i move it to the front vent (no defrost) its nice and hot.But on Defrost its not that great.

Van engine temp itself is around Half way mark on temp gauge and climbs at idle (doesnt reach the red) but gets close sometimes.

No engine coolant loss ,oil looks fine ect

Should i just get the system flushed already? and go from there??

make sure they use a cleaner as opposed to just draining the old fluid out and new in.

On my 03 I found the cabin air filters to be really dirty ,and after cleaning them what a difference ,I got better air flow and perhaps a little more heat or at least I thought so. It is a cheap fix, hope it helps.

How do you easily flush the heater core? That thing is hard to get to.

Thanks for the help!

If they flush the system, the heater core should get flushed. I've back flushed them in the past by disconnecting the heater hoses and hooking a hose to the outlet and flushing straight water through just to blow out any loose sediment.
