Does anyone know if a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4 liter 6 cylinder is a close-tolerant engine?

Tried to find a clear answer on close-tolerant/interference but did notice you should have a timing chain not a belt. Did the chain break?

No. Someone told me they would replace the intake manifold gasket if it was not a close/ tolerant engine. They didn't want to worry about messing up the timing. I was not able to get the car to them to look at to determine if it was.

Either you are misunderstanding something or they are not familar with the engine in your car. Changing an intake manifold gasket should not involve anything to do with messing up the timing or close-tolerant/interference engine design.
This link shows you how it is done and has no reference to timing.
