My daughter has a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. The other day she called me because the car cut off. I went to check on it and it needed oil and the motor was ticking. The ticking stopped after adding oil and it drove home but on the way home it cut off when stopped at a red light. It started again and it made it home. Again it cut off in the driveway as she was parking. The resonator doesn’t have a filter on it. She went to get the oil changed and the guy told her to get a filter for the resonator that it why it keeps cutting off. Can that happen?

A resonator is part of the exhaust system to prevent a droning exhaust noise.
So there is no filter for a 'resonator'.
Any chance you mean an air filter?
A picture might clarify what you mean.

Yes I meant an air filter. I posted a pic of what the filter looks like.

That is an aftermarket part not the original factory set up. Unless you have a check engine light on that is not causing the car to stall.
Do you have a check engine light on?
How many miles since the car had a tuneup, plugs, filters, etc.?

I found that when my sunfire stalled out like that, I had too much of a load on the alternator. I upgraded the alternator to a 250 AMP model and it hasn't cut out since...
