Hello Everyone,
I am wondering what kind of block heater my car has? I can find it on GM parts sites, but, I would like to know does it go into the coolant jacket or does it just sit against the head/Block in some way. It is very different and have not seen one like it. It is a small box type on the Right Rear upper part of the block. It almost looks like its attached to the head but cant tell. It is held on with only a small say 8mm bolt and has two metal protrusions(tubes) about 6 inches long and then the cord fits into the end of that. I replaced the cord and got it working but it is slightly loose and can wiggle it approx. 1/8" to 3/16th. I have searched everywhere for info on this and cannot find any. Thanks in Advance!

Most block heaters will penetrate the engine coolant jacket via a expansion plug in the block, the box you see most likely is the electronics that control it.

If you have one it may be a aftermarket unit or a dealer installed option.

does it plug into a wall outlet? or run off the car battery?

Hi and thanks for replying, I am pretty certain this is a factory install, its in my owners manual and I did find it on a GM parts dealer website. It plugs into a typical house hold outlet 120vlt. However it sits right below the head from what I can tell and in between the exhaust manifold. I don't believe any freeze plugs are that high up, but, I could be wrong. If you google GM block heater #12587535 you will find parts diagrams on it and it shows where it is located on the block but does not show if it goes internally into a cooling jacket or if it is only bolted against the engine surface somehow.

I will check it out once I get my PC running again I am using my iPad which is not the best for me to use while researching. Does the box have any wires coming from it going into a wire loom or to another part of the engine you cannot see?

Hi I think I may have figured it out I used a mirror and flashlight. It sits right below the exhaust manifold just below the head. The block has a protruding casting that runs the length of the block approx 1" deep and maybe an inch in width. The block heater fits over this and does have a GM stamp on it but could not make out the number. It does have a single 10mm screw holding it on no other wires coming from it only the long metal tube extentions that stick out towards the firewall and the end of that is where the cord plugs in, I did manage to tighten it and it does not move now. So I believe that casting in the block must be a water passage and the heater heats via radiation like an oil pan heater. I really appreciate your assistance on this.

When you can please post some pictures of this for anyone else interested in this thread.

I sure will as soon as it warms up a bit outside it was 15deg this morning! I live in Montana. Thanks again

I do not see a problem it is like 79 here, your temperature gauge must be off slightly.:D
