2004 Pontiac Montana DVD player

I am a proud owner of a 2004 Pontiac Montana. I paid 1400$ 150k miles. Overall it is in great condition and runs and shifts smoothly. Thanks for having me.

So I am just trying to fix the small odds and ends since I have no major issues. One of them being the factory DVD player. The issue is, the lights for the receiver come on at night, so I know there is some sort of power to it. It doesn't let me insert a disc and the screen doesn't seem to have power to it. Previous owner installed/had installed a JVC Kw r500 radio. I'm wondering a few things. For one how is it supposed to work? Is there a power button for the screen? How strong of a possibility is it that the radio install caused the issue? Does the radio have something to do with DVD PLAYER? I am pretty tech and mechanically inclined, so I was thinking since I can't insert the DVD that the receiver is broke in general. If that is the issue, then how can I check screen to try and find something else to hook to it? Any schematics on wiring or something? I appreciate all and any help that yall can give me, and thanks again for having me here at the forums.

The first thing I would do is disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the radio and see what the previous owner did to the wiring.

If you find the harness has been tampered with or cut and spliced in any way, remove any electrical tape.

Using good lighting make sure each wire is connected properly ( soldered and protected with heat shrink tubing )

Look for connectors the Previous owner may have left off, ( I am guessing he may have left off a plug that goes to the DVD player) however this is just a guess.

Regardless if it fixes the problem or not, any crimp on type connectors or worse twisted and taped connections need to be soldered properly and protected with heat shrink tubing.

Once you know the connections to the OEM radio are all there and connected properly with no bent pins. check the Head unit for a fuse if it has one check it then reinstall the radio where it is secure but not mounted just yet.

Remove the DVD player and ensure the connections at the DVD player are in good shape as well and no plugs are missing. Also check the DVD player for a fuse. ( some OEM equipment have fuses some rely on the wiring harness fuses solely )

Same thing reinstall the DVD player temporary so the DVD player is secure but not mounted.

Then reconnect the battery, with a computer safe test light test, each and every fuse to ensure you have power going in the fuse and out the fuse.

I am asking for you to test each fuse for a few reasons, first I have no idea what fuses are for what circuits. ( sometimes one fuse will protect more than one circuit ).

Secondly since you just purchased this van this will give you an opportunity to check for missing fuses and fuses that have been install with the wrong amp rating.

Make sure to check all the fuse boxes and compare what you have to what the owners manual say you should have.

If you see any fuses missing make sure it shows to be empty according to the manual.

Once you know the wiring is intact for the Radio and DVD player plus all the fuses are good and have power to them, read the owners manual and check to see if your operating it correctly.

If you still do not have a working DVD player we will have to help you pin point which connections are supposed to have power and which one should have a ground on each unit.

Normally these wires are universally color coded yet we will need a service manual or wiring diagram to know for sure.( hopefully you will find a easy to spot problem before a wiring diagram is needed )


If you find the problem without the need for a diagram perform a wiggle test on your harness repairs if any were done and make sure you will not have any problems once the units are secured permanently.

Thanks for the fast reply. Since it is dark here in Florida already, I will be taking a look tomorrow. As stated earlier the seek buttons, open/close buttons will illuminate when it is night time. I don't notice them during the day. So I'm guessing some kind of power is going to it. This DVD is separate from the radio. It is under the cigarette lighter ports at bottom of console. The lights you see on at night are part of the dash light circuit. the rest of the DVD player seems dead like the previous owner left off a connector.

Check in out when you can and let us know what you find.

Again do not forget to read the owners manual, it may come in handy if your just not operating it correctly.
