2004 Sunfire Horn Switch Replacement

Hi, I'm new to forum, hope you can help me.

My 2004 Sunfire horn does not work when steering wheel switch is depressed.

The horn tests OK on the bench

Relay is new.

AlldataDIY trouble shooting procedure points me to the switch. The plastic trim behind the wheel is removed, and the air bag is disarmed per the trouble shooting procedure.

Problem: Do I really need the special J44298 tool to remove the air bag/trim cover? It may also be known as a J42578 tool. It pries off the cover from behind. I may be able to use a flat headed screw driver to pry the spring clips.

Can I get to the switch without removing this? Does anyone have experience with this?
 
Thanks melsg5, your links helped me better understand what I was looking at. I was ready to rip off the air bag fascia cover - not good. I did not need the special tool. On my car, a slotted screw driver removed released the tabs holding the air bag unit as one of your links suggested.

So I think I found the "switch", which is really just four springs that keep two sections of the steering wheel from connecting when you press the airbag fascia (center of steering wheel).

I discovered that a plastic tube that keeps the horn hotwire connected had chipped off. I glued it back on and a plastic tube will bayonet fit into it to make sure a positive connection exists always.

But now the horn stays on. I think it is because the springs that are really the horn switch are fatigued or something and don't allow the center of the wheel to spring back and open the horn connection. I'm wondering if I should replace them. An internet search does not lead me to believe this is a common problem. Do any of you feel horns are a common problem in GM J cars?
 
I have not seen any trend that there is a horn issue.
