ok i have this pontiac montana , and it has this annoying whining sound under the hood , i thought it was the power steering pump, so i replaced it , then was quite frustrated , when i was completed that the whine was still there ...
this whining noise increases as you accelerate !!!

anyone have any suggestions as to what you think i should look into rather then pay some shop a couple hundred to just figure it out then drop a crazy bill on me ...

water pump bearing ? alternator ? tensioner ? i dunno

Had same thing on my 2000 and my 2003 and it was the Tensioner pulley . But I have the 3.4 l . For me it was cheap enough to guess at. Less than $20 on rockauto. Com.

use a rubber hose, hold one ear against your ear and move the other end around till you find the component making the noise

Also mine made more of a chirping sound. Also I sprayed WD 40 on it and it went away for few weeks so I knew I was on to something.

problem solved !! it was the power steering pump , the new one was good the problem was the power steering fluid cooling line had a leak at the clamp below the rad , which would allow air into the line ...

glad to hear you resolved the problem
