My 2006 Torrent started having an ABS problem. At low very speeds, while coasting to a stop the ABS sometimes kicks in. My mechanic says none of the sensors are reporting errors. He can't do anything unless the problem gets worse so he can get a fault code. Problem does not happen every time.

All he can do is look for a bad harness connection to the sensors until you get a code.

2006 Pontiac Torrent ABS coming on at some stops

Hi
I to just had the same problem happen to me about one week ago. I have a 2006 Torrent as well. It only comes on when i brake harder at slow speeds mainly at a stop sign or light. I been told i need brake pads. If my pads are worn could this maybe be the cause? I was thinking if the pads at worn doen and my car has the original rotors with 98000 miles maybe there is a lack in braking on one side causing the ABS to engage. Just a thought? I may try and put new pads on and see what happens since they have to be replaced anyway. I will leave the original rotors on. Any thoughts out there?
Thanks
Al

It's amazing you have that much mileage on the pads and havent damaged the rotors.

If you have 98000 on the pads, I'd plan on replacing the rotors as well. Even if you've not touched down on the pads, that many miles with the same pads have had to caused and irrgular wear pattern on the rotor and just replacing the pads will have you in for another brake job in a relatively short period of time.

ABS problems

Hi,
I changed the rotors and front brake pads today and since the rotors were off i took off the ABS sensors and cleaned them with contact cleaner and reinstalled them. I removed and cleaned the rear sensors as well. I also checked all the connections on the sensors. I still have the same problem any ideas??? I had to pull the fuse so they would not engage at every stop. I now have the traction light and the ABS light lite on my dash until i figure something out. Please HELP

You probably have a break in the wire on one or more sensors that hasn't shown through the insulation. You can get replacement harness pigtails at most auto parts stores.

And no codes? It sounds like at least one speed sensor is shot.

Hi Guys and thanks for the info. Could i go to Auto Zone or a similar parts store to see if they get any codes? How do i test the sensors to see what one or ones are bad?

I could be wrong but I dont think autozone can check the brake system. You probably need a shop with the correct scanners for that purpose.

I made a few calls and it seems that Advanced auto and a local service station would not be able to diagnose because no lights are coming up on the dash. One place told me he would start changing out parts until its fixed. The dealer said they could diagnose it for a price, i am sure a big price. Are they right that there is not a definite way to tell since the light is not coming on? What is the next step dealer or start changing out parts.

I would say dealer. You could start throwing parts and your time at the problem and still not fix it.

koolwhizzer,
I would also recommend that you contact your dealer in regards to this. They are in the best position to get this issue diagnosed for you. Please keep me posted and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

Hi,
I took your advice and brought my car into the dealer this morning to have my ABS problem diagnosed. Just got a call from the service dept and they informed me that the front right and rear left wheel senors are bad. They also informed me they would have to replace the complete hub assemblies for both front and rear for a small fee of $960 to rich for me. Now that i know whats going on i called the local Napa parts store and they ordered both wheel sensors for me and they will arrive for pickup tomorrow morning for a price tag of approximately $125. I already had all of them out to clean so it should go pretty quick. Is this unusual to have 2 bad ones go out at the same time? Anyway i hope they got it right. I will post once i get the parts installed and take it for a test ride.

It's pretty rare for the sensors built into the hubs to go bad, it's usually the bearing itself that fails. I never saw where you had said anything about any noises that are symptoms of a bad bearing. What you most likely have is lost continuity in the sensor harness from a small break in the wire itself. That is the most common issue with ABS problems on later model GM cars. If you take the time to feel along the wires as you pull on it gently, you can find the break. You can buy replacement harness pigtails at most FLAPS and fix the issue yourself cheaply.

The dealer did not mention anything wrong with the wheel bearings on either of them. Earlier before i cleaned the sensors i checked all 4 corners for looseness and vertical play, no problems. No noise either. I questioned the complete hub assembly as well and they said they do not replace just the wheel senors its the whole assembly. I have to guess that is the way they do this type of repair? Anyway i am on my way down to Napa to pick up the wheel sensors and then i will install them this morning. I will post with the outcome. Hope it a fix. Still trying to figure out how 2 can be bad at the same time???

Hi Stacy,
Just got done installing the wheels senors on my torrent. I still have the same issue. I do not know what to do next. I am out the $105 dollars D"Arcy Pontiac GMC in Joliet IL. charged me to diagnose the problem and another $135 for the 2 ABS Wheel Sensors.

Heres what the dealer notes on my bill says

" Customer states ABS seems to activate when slowing to a stop
Scan for codes none stored. Test drive with scanner found right front and left rear speed senor dropping out
Needs both Hub bearing assemblies
Parts and labor 895.00"

Whats the next step

I still say your problem is in the wiring harness beyond where it plugs into the sensors in the hubs.
