2006 Torrent ABS activates at low speeds

Hi
msmith1956 I see what you are talking about. The harness that comes from the sensor plug to the plug that is mounted on the in my case inner fender well. I will see if i can get to it and see it there is a visible break or i will use my multimeter to see if there is continuity. I will keep you posted on the outcome. Should i try all the corners or the 2 that the dealers identified?

I was able to locate the front wiring harnesses that lead up to the plug for the wheels sensors. I unpluged on both ends and hooked up my Fluke multimeter and shook and bent the wire to see if it opens and both of them did not. I assume they are fine? I looked at the rear pigtail wiring harnesses and they were alittle harder to get to. As mentioned the dealer originally told me i would need to replace the complete hub assemblies on the front passenger and the rear left drivers side. Can this be true. I have changed just the sensors in other vehicles i owned in the past and that seemed to do the trick when infact i also just cleaned them in my 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix and that alone did the trick. Please advice or comment?

Hi Stacy
Was there a problem with the ABS sensors on some of these GM vehicles that warrant changing the complete hub assemblies when diagnosed with a problem like mine. Please let me know what you find out from a GM standpoint and we can go from there.
Thanks

It looks like your speed sensors aren't built into the hub, but my guess is the pulse ring is part of the bearing though. I'm seeing them both with and without the sensors on rockauto.com

I went on rockauto.com and saw the hubs you are talking about. Looks like they carry wheel hubs for ABS and none ABS pontiac torrents. I did not realize they had my vehicle without ABS. Mine is not an all wheel vehicle just a standard disc in front and drums on the rear. I ended up pulling the fuse so i can drive around tonight. When i pull the fuse the traction and ABS light comes on the dash. These light never come on since i had this problem. I still hear very faint fast clicking noises now and again at stops when the fuse is pulled. Dont remember hearing that before. Still wondering how i should approach this tomorrow? Still waiting for ideas.

Yep, your vehicle cam with ABS as an option just like my GA. ABS was standard equipment on almost all GM cars until around '01-'02 and then they made it optional to cut costs. My '04 GA doesn't have ETS or ABS on it. As for your issue, I'm starting to run out of ideas other than a possible break in a wire somewhere or a bad connection at the BCM.

Just wondering if i should replace both complete hub assemblies as the dealer advised. I spent $105 for them to diagnose and if i let them handle it that is what they would have done. Still wondering how 2 could be bad all of a sudden and why change out the whole hub. I installed new senors shouldnt that be the same thing if they were dropping out as the dealer mentioned? Still waiting to hear what Stacy at GM Customer service has to say.

koolwhizzer,
I sent your question to one of my internal resources and this is the response that I received.
Hub bearing assemblies could possibly need to be replaced for unwanted abs activation during slow speed stops due to excessive air gap between wheel speed sensor and tone ring in the hub bearing assembly. Hub bearing assemblies that become loose can also cause this. This could also be caused by a wiring issue in the wheel speed sensor circuits or mis-matched/incorrect sized tires. Accurate diagnosis performed during a duplication of the event will resolve issues.
I hope this helps! Please keep me posted and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
Thank you,
Stacy GM Customer Service

Hi,
I went to the local Napa parts store after lunch to pickup a front and a rear complete hub assembly. I had to pick up a 34mm socket for my impact as well. The socket is for the front spindle nut. I started on the front using a 13mm six point socket to remove the 3 cap screws on the front hub. I was only able to loosen one, stripped one and the last one was going to come loose. I soaked them all down with penetrating oil before i started. I was going to use a cutoff wheel on my electric angle grinder and slice between the old hub and the backing plate. Before i started i checked to see if i could get ahold of 3 replacements and Napa only had grade 5. I thought they might be a grade 8 or 9 so i called the dealer and they were out of them and would get them next week. I wrapped up the front till next week and started on the rear. This one went alot better. The four capscrews came out alot easier. I removed the old hub and installed the new one. I crossed my fingers started the car and down the street i go to the stop sign. No ABS noise. Figured i would ride around the neighborhood for awhile and it looks to be fixed. Now i do not know if i want to change out the front one next week when the bolts come in. The dealer did say both are dropping out. I guess i will wait and see what happens since i can not do anything till next week anyway.
Just want to say a big thanks to all and i will report next week to let you know if the back one did the trick alone or if i will have to change out the front one. Like i often say dont fix it if it is not broke.
