Wassup all. I currently have a 2.8L 3rd generation bird. I plan on changing the tranny to a manual and droppin' in a v8. A family member of mine has a 305 engine that he doesn't use and is going to let me have for free. At first, I was set on a 350, but since it is free, I'm gonna take the 305. I heard that the 305 is kinda disappointing. What is wrong with the 305? O yeah, I'm not sure if it is a TPI or a TBI 305. All I know is that is the same year as my bird which is 87'.

I don't know why it would be a disappointing step up from a 2.8? Unless you really want to get on it. For everyday use and a little pep, the 305 should be a decent choice. I have a 305 4bbl in my 87 GP and the car is pretty quick. Matter of fact I really have trouble doing the speed limit. Got a ticket for going 88 in a 65 and the cop said it looked like I was going at least 90. Didn't feel all that fast to me.

If/when the 305 dies I would probably replace it with a 350, unless I had a nice "free" 305 laying around.

Had a 305 in my '77 Lemans, which was a 4000-lb tank (but still a nicely styled one...). It seemed fairly strong. Should do fine in your Firebird, which I'm sure weighs less.

Thats three votes for the 305. I drove alot of early ninety Caprices as taxi's and the 305 is not only a little mover they seemed to outlast both the 350 "service duty"engines I killed. Had a 2.8 in a Camaro and believe me you will feel the difference. The ONLY thing wrong with the 305 over the 350 is displacement, they are the same engine.

the 305 is disappointing when compared to the 350, but it will much MUCH better then the 2.8...I say throw that bad boy in there...
