Hey, my friend has a 1997 Sunfire with the 2.2L I4 engine.

Currently I believe he has the 3 spd trans with TCC lock up.
However, his trans broke, it slips, car won't drive, etc...

I have a spare 1989 Corsica 3T40 transmission, 3SPD auto with TCC lock up.
This Corsica was a 2.8L v6.
I used this trans for a short time on my 3.1L v6, but now its just sitting around.

Instead of throwing it in the trash, I offered to give it to him if I can verify it will work on his Sunfire.
(Better than throwing it in the trash)

This trans is old, it has sat a year, and has 200K+ miles on it.
I told him that I'm 60-70% certain it will work for him if it will bolt into his car.

He said he is willing to take the chance because he wants to sell the car, and nobody will pay anything for it unless it is drivable.

I basically want to make sure the bell housing from this 2.8 v6 3T40 will bolt onto his 2.2L I4 engine. AAnd if the axels on his car will plug into this transmission as well.

Thanks in advance

Nice to see this thread was reset and the replies are deleted.
Thanks a lot.

Anyways, it was a good thing I used a different forum, I found the answer.

The 3T40 transmission from the 1989 Corsica/Beretta is the same as the 3T40 used in the 1997 Pontiac Sunfire.

The splines for the axels are the same, and the bell housing is the same for the 2.2L I4 and the 2.8L v6 and the 3.1L v6.

So that is good news for people who own the pontiac sunfire with this bolt pattern, it means you can upgrade to the 3.1L v6 and have a car with more power under the hood.

The only differences between my corsica trans and the Sunfire trans is that mine has higher gears and a lower stall torque.

So if I use my v6 trans in an I4 sunfire, then that means the sinfire will lose about 1-2 seconds of acceleration.

Anyways, administrators, please do not delete this thread or anything, it might prove useful to others who own the Sunfire that might consider upgrading to a v6 or if they desire replacing the transmission, this shows that they have options.

And this is true because I am installing my trans in my friends sunfire because his sunfire trans slips to much and is broken...

Also, the 2.4L I4 or the Quad 4 4 banger engines have a different bolt pattern, that means they can't mate to the 3T40 trans from a 3.1/2.8 v8 engine...

the delete was an accident, I intended to delete only my post, sorry.
