picking up a real clean pretty much stock/original '63 lemans with a blown 4 cycl in it. (rod through the pan) I can pick up a '67 326 with a powerglide for it. I am thinking it will fit right in. WHat is the situation with the exhaust manifold(s)?

From what I can see the 326 in 1963 was a 1 year only motor and parts listings for motor mounts, for instance, start with 1964. What are you referring to concerning the exhaust manifolds.

Trying to figure this out before I get in over my head. I can pick up a real nice '63 for $4000 but I need to replace the 195 4 cyl motor(rod through the pan). I can pick up a '67 326 with a power glide for $350. I would like to do this as a project with my 15 year old son. I am reading that most of the pontiac motors are the same size and am thinking this should bolt right up. If these are all the same size I should be able to locate exhaust manifolds off any older ponitac and make them work.

Correct on same size for Pontiac motors but all the listings start at 64. Also didnt the 63 use a rather unique transmission set up, I believe it was a transaxle.

I can use the 326/powerglide combination if I need to. What do you figure is involved to get this to mount up?

Really cannt answer that, never tried myself or ran into any article concerning that. Try posting your question at the forums on www.performanceyears.com or calling www.amesperf.com . Good luck with your project.

replys look bad - will have to pass onthe project

First answer No, not exactly a 63 326 Pontiac is really a 336. It's dimensions are bore 3.78 X stroke 3.75. In 1964 the 326 really becomes a 326 now at 3.72 X 3.75 and doesn't change till the end of it's production life in 1967.
The 4 cylinder ( 1/2 of the 389 V-8 ) engine and the 63 326 have many different parts. Differences in the engine mounts, torque tube/shaft and trans between the 4 and 8 cyl Tempests are different. So even a 63 326 V-8 couldn't just be swapped in. There are also differences in the 63 326 and the 67 326 externally. There are differences in the starter mounts, crankshaft ends, etc. between early (1963) and late (64-67) 326's.

As far as the transmissions go you are really looking at apples and oranges. 1961-1963 Tempest use a transaxle ( clutch, or converter if it's a automatic, transmission & third member and axle combined in one unit) and it's located in the rear of the car and has a flexible rope drive shaft in a torque tube that connects to the engine in the front of the car.
The automatic transmission from the 67 326 is not a powerglide. It's a ST300 and it's a four range two speed automatic that is bolted to the back of the engine in a conventional driveline manner.
Hate to be the bad messenger here, but that's how it is.

I am in San Diego - I am tempted to haul it down to TJ and have someone work it all out.

Hold the horses - just found a '63 lemans rust bucket with a 326 in it 2 hours away. Engine runs. Maybe, just maybe.

Could save yourself tons of grieve if you move your target up one year to 64. Could even make a GTO clone.

Don't have any '64s up for sale down here. This '63 was looking like a real gem. Luster is fading a tad.

Wait - '64 lemans - restored local - $15k
