Hello,

I am fixing up the car floor of my 66 Lemans and checked the forum to get information on the correct way to restore the car floor.

First I am having a little bit of a challenge on removing the center console - the shift knob does not want to come out. The knob rotates counterclockwise but does not want to come off the stick. I'm afraid to break something so it's better to ask first.

Here's what the knob looks like: shift knob.JPG

So after I remove the center console which looks like only 4 screws fasten it to the body, here are the steps I plan to do:
1. Remove the old carpet
2. Wire brush the entire floor
3. Clean with alcohol or thinner
4. Apply rustoleum paint with roller
5. Install Dynamat as a sound deadener on the floor and engine firewall.
6. Install the carpet from OPGI or Ames which contours to the shape of the car floor.
7. Reinstall the center console.

What do you guys think about the above steps?

Thank you

There was a black rubbery "tar"-like film which was stuck to the floor pan. When I tried removing it fell apart. Is this original?

Also I found flat ribbon cable running from the engine firewall going to the back of the car. Does anyone know what this wiring is for?

Tomorrow, I will attach a wire brush on my electric drill and clean the entire floor. Then wipe it with acetone. Let it dry and then apply black rustoleum paint.

A bit of good news: There was hardly any rust on the floor, so I escaped with no need for welding :)

was the tar like substance along seams?
the wires are for the all the rear lights and gas tank sender.
you got lucky with the absence of rust.

Melsg5,

Here are pics of the rubber tar-like padding I found on my car floor plan. I'm posting the pics for others to know what to expect.

It was too good to be true! I wasn't that lucky... after finishing the wire brushing of the flooring, I discovered some rust holes the size of drinking straw holes on the passenger floor :(

I am tempted to just use Bondo fiberglass filler to cover the hole unless you folks think that is the incorrect way to do the repair. I think it is non-structural, but not so sure since the weight of the passengers legs are on the floor pan.

a hole that small will not hurt the structural integrity of the floor.
