Dear forum,

Does anyone here know how to replace the turn signal switch on a 66 Lemans?

I'm stuck - I was able to remove the horn bar, sterring wheel, horn contact button but can't pull out the turn signal switch. The wires appear to run under a steel bar which is welded to the steering column.

Yes, melsg5 - while waiting for a forum response, I found the same link too!
Thanks for your reply.

I do not understand what the photos from 20/32, 21/32, 22/32 and 23/32 mean... why are they needing to cut the steering wheel collar?

Also the photo 10/32 is very close to what I have.... does it mean to use a screwdriver to pry the turn signal wiring from the steering column?

Thanks again

I can see how unclear this article is, pictures with no instructions. The oldest factory manual I have is from 1970. It provides a suggestion to wrap the wire harness with tape to prevent the wires from snagging on anything as you pull the harness out from the column. The other suggestion is to wrap some thread/rope around the end of the harness to make it easier to pull the new harness down the column. I take it you do not have the 1966 manual.

I have the 1966 service manual. The problem is it does not go into detail on how to remove/replace the turn signal switch.

If I remember correctly to replace the switch on a pre 1967 car you have to remove the wires from the plastic connector at the bottom of the switch, and the connector will not pull thru the smaller not collapsible steering column's. I had to do it that way on my old 65 GTO.
The later cars have a wider column and it can be fished thru. On my 65 the lower cover was not welded to the lower column, but had small tabs that locked into it. But the connector still would not pass thru the color of the column.

Your replacement switch is the smaller type without the hazard light switch correct?

Hi cammerjeff,

Thanks for your reply. Your notes above are pretty darn close to what I have and you are confirming what I see.

Couple of questions: Do you remember if you had to remove the U-bolt which holds the steering column to remove the lower cover? What prevents the steering collar from rotating? Is it bolted to the column to keep it from turning?

Thanks again

I think you do have to remove the U-bolt to remove the cover, sorry I can not remember what keeps the collar from rotating.
