69 Lemans-couple questions

I just picked up a 69 lemans-gto clone. Needs a bunch of work so Im starting with a front end rebuild.
Are the lower control arm bushings round or oval in these models?
I want to order a front end kit but don't know which it might be.
I cant go check as I just had surgery on my knee and am in a cast.

Also have a bad axle race on rear drivers side. Whats best way to fix?

Looking at the GTO catalog from www.amesperformance.com for 68 and 69 the rear lower arm bushings are oval.
Not exactly clear on your second question are you asking how to remove the race?

You can use a tool on the end of a slidehammer or use a dremel to cut a groove slice in it or run a weld bead all the way around the race which shrinks it when it cools.

All "internet " removal tricks. I have not done these.............:confused:

I just ordered a front disc brakes conversion and a front end kit. Figure If I have it all apart I might as well change it all...

Any tips or tricks to make it go smooth?
 
pretty straight forward, do you have a pickle fork for ball joints, tie rods, etc. and a BFH?

My girls cousin are going to hook the body work up for me all I have to do is buy paint!..
It need an interior though... how hard a job? Im thinking of going with all black
 
I've always found interior much easier than body work. Except if you manage to give yourself 2 black eyes re-upholstering the seats. Don't ask.

Ive heard to either do it whiles its hot outside or use a heat gun.

Rear End.....

1969 Pontiac lemans Abody...
im pretty sure I now have a 2.56 in there....The axle bearing races are bad I believe as Im getting a lot of noise from there....

I have on hand a 71 cutlass entire rear end. Its stamped r2 which should also be a 2.56 came out of an olds that had 30000 miles on it..

is it even worth the swap? will it work? How hard of a job is it to replace the guts and bearings on the one I have now? Would I have to shorten the driveshaft to make that swap work? There is 130,000 miles on them.....

Im still learning so these questions may seem peculiar to you guys but any info helps!
 
Worth the swap if you change the ratio. Like to a 3.55 or 3.73. Get the 2 series diff real cheap, then spend $600 for the upgrade. Limited slip also, of course.

I was under the impression that the bigger ratios wouldn't fit in the 2.56 housing? Will they?

What I meant was, if the 2 series Olds differential is available cheaply, get it. (And you are correct, palaw, that the 3 series gears won't fit on the 2 series carrier, but you can get the 3 series carrier to fit no problem in the differential no problem. There are adapters for putting a 3 series gear set on a 2 series carrier, but it's not really recommended.)

Then upgrade to a 3 series carrier, along with limited slip. If the Olds diff already has a 3 series carrier, then all you have to do is upgrade the ratio and add limited slip.

Or, fix the OE diff with its' bearing race problem, and upgrade it.
 
Got ya!!! Thanks Guys were getting hit with a blizzard right now so no work is getting done anytime soon.... Ive got a front end kit with a new disk brake kit to go in....
also have the rear work to do...

Would I need anything else for the brake conversion to go smoothly?
 
the kit has the rubber lines and a new master cylinder?
 
it came with rubber hoses but no master cylinder or booster...
What master cylinder would I need?
Do I also need proportioning valve?
Would I need new booster as well?



Heres what I have so far....
Kit Includes 11" Rotors, Loaded Large GM Calipers, Caliper Brackets, Backing Plates, Stock Height Spindles, Brake Hoses, Hoses with Banjo Bolts, Bearings, Seals, Dust Caps, Spindle Nuts, Spindle Washers and all Hardware. Must use 15" or larger wheels with this kit.
