75 400 engine question

Can someone help me out, I have a what appears to be a 75’400 block. I pulled the engine to replace rear main and the seal didn’t fit. And this is the pictures of the inisde. Does anyone know why they might have done this to the rod caps. Any help would be great thanks

A guess would be someone performed a rod balancing operation on them.

Agreed, the only other possibility would be clearance issue on a crank scraper, but my best guess would be a balancing job.

Sorry might be a stupid question but what are some reasons they might of done a balancing job?

The engine was being rebuilt and they intended to race it.
