Looking for some help on a wiring problem. 77 firebird T/A. The coil has voltage going to it when ignition switch is in off position. Even when switch is removed there is a slight voltage draw to the coil. I traced the pink wire from ignition switch and found it splits into 3 pink wires. One goes to the block then out to the coil, the other two go to fuse block/fuses. Has anyone ever run into a slight volt drawl issue, and could point me in a direction to go, thanks.

think you will have to supply more information. A 1977 should have an HEI distributor with the coil built in. There are twp plugs, one BAT and one DIST. So exactly what kind of ignition system is on your car?

It does have HEI. the 2 plugs I thought are 1 for ignition from engine harness and 2nd plug would be for tach which is unused. The wire going to the ignition on the coil should only be hot when in the start and run position. In those positions it has 12 volts. When ignition is off this wire at coil still has voltage going to it. I hope this helps. I am a collision tech so this kind of issue I am struggling with. Thanks for the quick response.

Not sure why the reply didn't go thru. Kinda new to me these forums. Anyhow I do have HEI distributer with coil on top. There are two connections at the coil. One is for the ignition wire (pink) and the other for a tach which is unused. I have 12 volts at pink ignition wire during run and on position but when I turn ignition switch to off I still have low voltage at the coil (pink wire). I was told it should have 0 voltage. I am a collision tech so wiring as this is tough. Thank you for replying quickly.

forgot to mention the pink wire is from the engine harness (new) plugged into the fuse block at firewall.

the large wire that is going to the distributor cap I assume also shows a reading of 12 volts?
you say the engine harness was replaced, did someone incorrectly connect the wires at the starter solenoid?
I believe there should be 4 wires at the solenoid. The large one from the battery + terminal, a wire with a fusible link, a wire going to the distributor, and a wire going to the ignition switch.
what prompted you to start checking voltage readings, the battery is going dead?

Correct, large wire from battery to solenoid -12 volts.
2nd smaller wire (purple) going to "S" side of solenoid.
3rd smaller wire, Not sure color also going to solenoid. Thats it.
I didn't check to see if battery would go dead,I am only assuming it would with having a 5.5 volt reading at pink coil wire when ignition is off. I did talk to a tech telling me to check all grounds under dash as well as body to block and battery.
*** Just a note - I have been restoring this vehicle, and am currently putting it back together. All under dash plugs are not connected and the rear wiring harness is not completely grounded. Im gonna start with connecting all grounds and maybe adding a few. Put back together and check coil again for draw. Im thinking all this voltage draw is just bad grounding?? Hopefully.
Do you think I'm heading in the right direction? Thank you again for your help.

you didnt answer the question about the BAT terminal on the distributor cap, do you have voltage?
your distributor is getting power from the starter/solenoid so I would concentrate on how that has been wired.
