Saw some spark when I pulled a plug, only looked at one plug.

It cranks just fine, but it only hits once in awhile but not enough to start.

Got new plugs but still it doesn't hit (turn over). Fuel is getting to the new Edelbrock carb. The carb has never been tuned that I know of.

Can you start from the beginning how you got to this point?
A few days ago you had a running car, what happened since then?

  1. We installed a new starter and starter ground.
  2. Dropped the tank an blew out the lines.
  3. Installed a new NSS.
  4. New plugs (gapped at 60)
  5. New battery
  6. New battery terminals
  7. New gas with additives (Heat & octane booster), there is old gas but not sure how much.
  8. New fuel pump
  9. Replaced some fuel lines (pump to carburetor).
  10. New ignition tumbler (new key).
I think that's about it...
Thank you for all your time you have put into helping me.

Did it run before you installed the carburetor?
Was the prior carburetor a Quadrajet?
Which Edelbrock carburetor are you using?

I got the car with the carburetor already installed on it and I don't know what type it is. So yeah, it did run before I worked on it but I never touched the carburetor.

When you replaced the plugs, any chance you reinstalled plug wires in wrong firing sequence?
You have an HEI ignition so you should see an obvious spark at the plugs, did you remove the cap and rotor and check their condition?
Do the advance weights and springs move freely?

I am 90% sure we got the firing order correct. I didn't remove the cap and I don't know what weights and springs are.

Remove the cap and rotor to check them and underneath are the advance weights and springs which should be rust free.

Ok, thank you. I'm not home at the moment, but I will do it in a couple hours.

Looks good, cap appears to be new.

I found a in-line 10 amp fuse going to the distributor cap, is this supposed to be there? I can not tell if it's broken but the prongs are rusted and corroded.

Believe you have two wires one marked on cap says BAT and the other TACH. Do not believe either one should have inline fuse.

The carburetor keeps back firing then it try's to start...

I also have a small white tube in the dash next to where the stereo is supposed to be, that's leaking oil, any ideas?

That was an aftermarket oil pressure guage that used that nylon tube

Install another one...or your interior will look like an oil spill.

Disconnect and cap the other end of the white tube.
At any point did you attempt to turn the distributor?
Get the groove on the harmonic balancer lined up with about 12 degrees before top dead center.
Remove the distributor cap and see whether the rotor contact lines up with the wire for cylinder 1 or 6.
Looking counterclockwise if the rotor points to cylinder 1 the wire sequence in the cap should be 18436572.
Looking counterclockwise if the rotor points to cylinder 6 the wire sequence in the cap should be 65721843

I have no idea where 12 degrees or TDC is. I never could figure out timing.

Yes, I tried to see if the distributor moved but it didn't.

Thank you both for the help.

Did you remove only one plug wire at a time when changing the plugs?

I think it is bad. I got point 6 on my high end. AutoZone will test it for me.
