84 2.5 check engine light flashing

So I have an 84 Fiero with the 2.5 in it. My check engine light is on so I used that special key to plug into the OBD plug and the light starts flashing, no codes, just keeps flashing slow enough for me to keep count and when I got to 30 even blinks I stopped counting. I did this as well with the engine off and it gave me the normal code that the computer is working. Whats going on? It doesnt flash unless I have that key in the plug, otherwise it says solid when the car is running.

First you need the ignition key in the run position but the engine not running.
Second it flashes each code 3 times. So the standard code "12" (one blink followed by 2 faster blinks) will happen 3 times. Then it will flash the code (3 times) causing the CEL light to stay on. After it flashes all bad codes it will flash the "12" again.

If you are still having a problem, Leave the center cover off and most auto parts stores will scan your car for free and give you a print out of what is causing the code and possible solutions to fix it.
