I just got this car a couple weeks ago and it's already driving me nuts. When I bought it the guy told me the fuel pump was going out of it. Well I talked to the guy I take most of my vehicles to and he told me it has plenty of fuel pressure. I changed the pickup coil in the distributor as it was brittle to even touch but that didn't help. It starts but it takes several cranks and when it finally does start the idle is all over the place and it dies if you don't feather gas. It's really hard to get the idle over three grand as you gave to feather the gas peddle as fast as you can. It has a brand new tps and when you unplug it it immediately dies so pretty sure it's working properly.. I have never owned one of these so it all feels so alien.. could someone give me a push in what they think is in the right direction so I can drive this thing? It's just eating at me sitting in the driveway haha thanks in advance

1. Did you check the cap and rotor?
2. Did you use an ohm meter on the plug wires?
3. What is the fuel pressure, "enough" is not the correct answer?
4. Did you check the fuel pressure regulator which is in the throttle body?
5. Is the check engine light on and if so what is the code?
6. Did you do a compression test?
7. Did you check the EGR function?
8. Did your mechanic do any further tests to determine the problem?
9. This engine was used in other GM products and anybody familiar with the 2.5 should be able to figure it out.

Sorry I'm a Ford guy this is the first GM vehicle I have owned.the check engine light is on and when I checked the code it said something about the tps but it's brand new. And I don't have a way to check fuel pressure. I took the ignition module in and had it tested they said it was good but it has a crack in it

Ironic, I just bought my first Ford. Anyway an engine is an engine regardless of who made it and with the internet you can find out most everything. Forget that the car is a Fiero, just google "testing GM 2.5 iron duke" and you will get lots of hits. The link below will help you retrieve the trouble code so that you can post it here. You can rent a fuel pressure tester. You also have all the other things to test I mentioned in my first response.

Check the MAS ( mass airflow sensor) and the IAC ( idle control valve) Both effect idle. Check Youtube to see how to test......
