I have a question. My 95 bird had shifting problems and the shifter was bent. We straighten it up and o.k. except that it shit into neutral from drive if you hit the shifter and not push the button. Any suggestions on why it is doing this? Husband thinks it is not an issue and I say it is. Who wants to be driving down the road at 80 and accidently hit the shifter and it goes into neutral. Help please. Tired of fighting over my baby.

I read that alot of people have only had trouble shifting out of park or button problems on your year of Firebird, I would probally get a used shifter and install that since yours is or was bent.

www.car-part.com used auto parts market will help you find one near you........;)

They list 4 of the them under "shifter linkage"

the question though was whether it is normal for a car in Drive to move into Neutral without pressing the button and I went into the garage and verified that it is normal.

Yes perfectly normal. A lot of shifters operate from the factory exactly as you describe, Michelle.
