96 3.8 v6 problem

I have a problem in my fuel somewhere in my car. It has a miss when accelerating or pressing the gas down hard. Also has a bad smell of has when running. I changed the plugs and wires, fuel filter, replaced the fuel pump. But it's still missing.

do you have a check engine light on? have you checked the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator for gasoline, if you find gas replace the regulator.

I have changed plugs and wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, and the coolant temperature sensor. The regulator doesn't have gas in it. When I put the new coolant sensor the car reads it's over heating but it is not. I checked it thoroughly for that.

Do you have a check engine light on? Did you follow the fuel line from the tank to the engine looking for a gasoline leak? Why did you change the sensor, maybe you installed the wrong sensor.

Sometimes in 3.8 engines the coolant sensor can tell the computer the engine is cold and the computer will dump extra gas to warm up to op temperature. If it sticks in an open loop the engine can flood. It is the right temp sensor Ifor sure. I didn't check for a leak in the line because of the smell of gas from the exhaust with a good cat on it. Can I assume that since I have asked you twice if the check engine light is on and you have not answered that it is NOT on? Are you saying the exhaust smells from gasoline? If the car didnt read hot until you changed the sensor I would suspect you have a bad sensor. If you have an ohm meter you may want to try this test

I keep forgetting you asked about the CE light. It is not on. I do not have an ohm meter, but I can try to find one. Yes, it is the exhaust that smells of gasoline.

Has the thermostat been replaced? Is the stat the proper temperature? If it is not the 195° stat it may be running cold, the computer won't go into closed loop, it will run rich. There probably wouldn't be a CEL as the ECU sees the engine has not come up to proper operating temp.

That's my theory.

I have not changed the thermostat. It's only $5 so I might just do that tonight

You don't need to change it if it's the right temp and it's working. Pull the one you have, check the temp stamped on it and test it in a pot of water with a thermometer to see when it opens.

If it's working properly then it's not the problem and you need to keep looking.

It would cost the same for a thermometer that u don't have as it would to change the thermostat. Even if it's not the problem I will have a thermostat with zero miles on it.
