96 Firebird Head Gasket Issue?

Driving home from work yesterday, I noticed my Temp gage start to rise slowly. Bunch of white smoke was coming out of my engine (later found out it was just coolant literally shooting through a heater hose). I also noticed I wasn't getting any heat to the cab. I pulled over, popped the hood, and saw one of my heater hoses was completely off. The engine never ran up to the 260 degree mark on my gage, but got pretty close. I took it to a garage and they hooked a pressure pump up to the the spot where the hose came off, and we could see that there was a leak coming from this hose. They showed me my antifreeze cap and said there was oil on it. They said they weren't sure, but they'd pressure test it later and get back to me. Now, my antifreeze has allllways been dirty. For YEARS. It goes in green and almost immediately comes out brown, I'm not sure if the radiator is really dirty or what, but I was never convinced it was oil in the coolant. Now, about them pressure testing it - if they didn't plug the spot where I had coolant leaking, and then they pressure tested it, theres no way they could know for sure that I was leaking due to a head gasket problem, and not just that hose, correct? Now, I got my car back after asking them to top off the fluids. The hose hasn't been replaced but obviously leaks a lot less because it is on for the most part. I again have heat in my cab, and in the 7-8 minutes it took me to get home, my car didn't overheat at all, didn't lose any performance and there was no white smoke coming out of my exhaust. Would my oil be milky already? If there was a pressure test done with that heater hose being plugged up, and it failed, would that be a definite indication of a blown headgasket? I'm just confused and don't want to get ripped off. Thanks in advance.

first make a correct repair on the hose(replace) then top off anti freeze keep an eye on you anti freeze level. if any symptoms come back. may be a problem. i can't imagine you would blow a head gasket that fast

am surprised your mechanic did not replace heater hose. Since auto. trans fluid is partially cooled by radiator you may want to check transmission fluid for water. either way sounds like it would be a good idea to have radiator flushed and checked. Change engine oil and filter and then monitor. If loosing coolant then may be a head gasket. May want to take to another shop.

Hi,
Just a thought but check your transmission fluid. I had a fluid transfer there once.
