I've had my 96 Grand AM since the late 90's and have had few problems out of it. Though recently after relocating it ended up sitting for 2 years and haven't really touched it since then.

The other day I decided to get it back on the road and after replacing a battery (which is needed) I tried starting it up but it was as if there wasn't any fuel in the gas tank, it was turning over like it was trying to start, just wouldn't catch. The gas tank is at least 2/3 full. Now this could be part of the problem, but that fuel has sat in it since I parked it, so the fuel is a bit old.

I also sprayed a little gas in the mass air valve while I was trying to get it to start, and it would sound like its starting but then cut right out. So I was thinking it could be the fuel pump or the fuel filter. I haven't changed the fuel filter since I've owned it nor the fuel pump.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any ideas or has had similar problems or possible solutions.

Thank you.

2 year old gas is not a good idea, if you can drain and refill that would be best. Otherwise replace the filter and if it still doesnt start check fuel pressure. Hoepfully you changed the oil and filter first!

Thanks for the help, today I drained the gas and replaced the fuel filter. The filter was awful so it needed to be changed regardless. After doing all that its still doing the same thing, when I start it up it turns over like its trying to start, its just not catching.

Is there any chance this could be the fuel pump, a relay or is there some sort of switch that if the tank is out of fuel it wont pump?

I'm a tad nervous about adding to much new fuel since if the problem is indeed with the fuel pump, I'll need to take the tank out since the pump is mounted inside of it.

I'm gonna try again tomorrow, so any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

check the fuel pressure with a gauge
