96 Grand am won't shift out of park

I just got a 96 Grand Am and among the problems is that I can not get the gear selector to shift out of park. Someone please help!:confused:
 
Try turning the key to the run postion w/o starting the car. Shift to nuetral and then start the car and shift to drive. Have someone check the switch that mounts above the brake pedal.
 
Check the brake switch

Most likely you have either a bad brake switch, it is mis adjusted, or the brake shifter solenoid is bad. You can bypass the brake switch or remove the solenoid all together, but that is where you need to start.
 
put your foot on the brake in order to shift out of park

I have the same problem with my 98 grand am... did you ever get it fix? and How what was wrong?
 
there is a "U Clip" right under the release lever on the handle of the shifter..sometimes they break..if it is broke ,then that would be your problem..
