Is the check engine light on? Did you have the car checked by a mechanic?

Yep need more information about how it's running.

great little car, if the compression is good everything else is an easy fix. the 2.2 is a very basic set up. I got one for free and have it running like new. most people buy a car and drive it till it quits running from no maintenance. spark plugs is first suspect, plug wires is #2, fuel pump with today ethanol is #3 fuel injector fuel screens or the fuel injector seal leaking #4 I had so many issues with mine I did them all. the car I gought had not run in 4 years, did all the above and it purrs like a kitten. not much to look at but 33-38 mpg is awesome.
again if it has good compression and the tranny shifts its a good project car

Also check front drivers side of the head where it bolts to the block. Head gaskets start leaking there. They are easy to work on if you have mechanical skills. Explain "engine doesn't quite run right".
